In the United States, the issue of lack of reimbursement for additional diagnostic tests for women with dense breast tissue by Medicare is becoming more pronounced. While standard mammograms are covered, more detailed exams such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound, which can detect cancer at early stages in these patients, are not reimbursed, leaving many with high bills for necessary procedures.
